In this interview, we talk with our trainee BeMS commissioning engineer, Dan Wiley, about his experience as a trainee with us...
As an SME, we believe that investing our time, efforts and money into a trainee is a great way to secure longevity for our business' future. Our Trainee BeMS Commissioning Engineer, Dan sits down with us for a short interview to tell us how he has found the experience so far.
Tell us a little about yourself and your role?
I’ve got two little kids, so a lot of my time is spent with them and my Fiancé. I also enjoy playing golf when I can, and have a season ticket for spurs, although unfortunately they are not doing very well at present.
I am currently training to become a BeMS Commissioning Engineer and it's a new career path I have embarked upon. I previously worked as a qualified electrician.

I enjoy that the projects we work on are varied and present different challenges that require different thought processes. One day I can be undertaking the commissioning of a new system alongside our Senior BeMS Commissioning Engineer; the next I can be undertaking a dilapidation report for a potential new client, investigating what is existing and identifying improvements that can be made; or learning the software side of things, how we intelligently control the items of plant and equipment on site, the importance of understanding a point schedule, specifications, and design parameters, etc.
There's a lot to learn, and at times I have questioned myself whether I have underestimated exactly how big of a commitment I have taken on, but I have been set on a structured training regime that has really helped to break everything up into more manageable chunks.
What’s been your favourite part of the process?
Being on site and learning from our Senior BeMS Commissioning Engineer. He is super informative, taking the time to take me through what we are working on and why, whilst I am a person that likes to know everything, so we work well together!

Probably the various number of things that I need to learn. I have found it quite daunting at times but with great support from the team and management it boosts my confidence. I believe that the training will be so rewarding for me, and I want to become a well-rounded engineer that can apply this training to good use!
How long until you are fully qualified?
I don’t think there is ever a deadline as every day is a learning day and even when we have years of experience, there is always room to grow and evolve. That is what really interested me because you can always be learning something new which challenges the way you do things and enhances your process.
Would you recommend the process to others?
The industry is probably not for everyone, but if you can guarantee that you will give 100% everyday then you stand every chance of being successful in the field. If you can 100% commit, then I would recommend this career path.
So why did you decide to take this opportunity at Cura specifically?
After initially speaking to Carly our Managing Director on the phone, and then meeting with Carly and Simon (Technical Director) at our office, I knew that it would be an easy decision for me. I could tell very quickly that this was a good place to work and since accepting the offer I have never looked back. I’ve been made to feel so welcome here and have been given the support I need to get where I want and need to be.
